Devon was honored during a ceremony Aug. 21 in Washington for its commitment to employees who have served the United States.

Deputy Defense Secretary Robert O. Work presented the 2015 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award to Devon.

“We’re proud of our employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve, and we’re pleased to be recognized as a company that supports their service,” President and CEO Dave Hager said. “We are committed to hiring military personnel because their dedication in service to our country fits well with our corporate culture at Devon. The skill, discipline and integrity required in military service are the same attributes we value in every one of our employees.”

Devon was one of 15 honorees selected from nearly 3,000 companies, municipalities and other entities nominated for consideration.

The Freedom Award is the highest recognition in a series of employer awards given by the Defense Department. Winners are selected based upon their exceptional support to Guard and Reserve employees.

A board, including senior Defense Department and other officials along with representatives of prior recipient organizations, select the winners.

Employees who have served the country nominated Devon for receptions it hosts for military employees and the benefits the company provides to them.

“The leadership at Devon Energy has a substantial track record of supporting all service members to include those serving in the National Guard,” Maj. Gen. Robbie Asher, adjutant general for the Oklahoma National Guard, said in a press release. “This prestigious national honor is well deserved as Devon truly epitomizes the highest level of commitment to those who serve our nation and state.”

In 2012, Devon created a goal that 6 percent of all new hires would have a military background. Last year, 10 percent of new hires had served their country.

Devon’s hiring and training practices for veterans have been honored multiple times this year, including being named a top employer by G.I. Jobs magazine and a best company by Military Times.
