Devon holds interests in 10 offshore and two onshore blocks in Brazil, including seven as an operator. The company has joined with Petrobras, the Brazilian national oil company, on six of these blocks to explore in Brazil's most promising offshore areas.
Areas of Exploration and Production
Campos Basin
Campos comprises 87 percent of all production of national crude oil, the largest Brazilian oil reservoir.
Polvo Field
Located about 60 miles from the coast of Armacao de Buzios in Rio de Janeiro, the Polvo field was Devon's first commercial production project in Brazil. Polvo production began in 2007. It is also the first fully private production project on the Brazilian continental platform.
Xerelete Field
Xerelete is a partnership with Petrobras. It's located 96 miles from the town of Cabo, Frio, and holds much promise for future exploration.
Camamu-Almada Basin
Located on the south coast of the State of Bahia, the basin's deep waters are considered the new frontier of Brazilian oil exploration.
Barreirinhas Basin
The Basin of Barreirinhas is located on the Brazilian equatorial margin along the coast of the State of Maranhao. The drilling vessel, Deepwater Discovery, began operations there in January 2009.
Parnaiba Basin
Located in the State of Maranhao, the Parnaiba Basin contains Devon's only two onshore blocks in Brazil.
Deepwater Exploration
In January 2009, Devon began an extensive offshore exploration drilling program in Brazil as operator of the Transocean Deepwater Discovery. The Deepwater Discovery is a fifth-generation, dynamically positioned drillship capable of operating in water depths of up to 10,006 feet.
Environmental and Social Responsibility
The work we do to protect the environment, preserve our natural resources and ensure the safety of our employees is a fundamental part of our culture. We consistently look for new and innovative ways to reduce our impact on the environment.
In 2007, during the licensing phase of Polvo, environmental projects were started -- a requirement from the Brazilian Institute for the Environment -- to monitor and minimize the impact of oil activity.
Community involvement is a cornerstone of Devon. We look for ways to support our neighbors, strengthen our schools and promote stability through support of cultural initiatives and civic projects.
Devon supports an organization in Rio de Janeiro that works with local fishing villages to foster environmental education and help protect the environment.
Devon has sponsored anthropological research involving fishing communities in the Basin of Campos. A subsequent documentary film, "Humano Mar" (Human Sea), which was based on this study, portrayed the daily lives of fishermen along the Rio de Janeiro coast.
Devon also is working to install care stations, which offer health services and other assistance to local fishermen.
