Operations - Jackfish 2 Project

Project Overview

Devon continues to evaluate the development potential of our oil sands leases in the Athabasca region of Alberta, and has identified sufficient oil sands to support an additional 35,000 barrel per day (5,565 m3/d) stand-alone project.

Devon’s proposed Jackfish 2 (J2) Project will be located approximately 15 km (10 miles) southeast of Conklin, Alberta in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. J2 will be adjacent to the initial Jackfish Project, which was approved in 2004 and is currently under construction. Devon holds a 100 percent working interest in 53 sections of land that make up the leases in Townships 75 and 76, Ranges 5, 6 and 7 W4M.

Preliminary information shows J2, which like Jackfish will use Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), could produce an additional 35,000 barrels per day (5,565 m3/d), or more, of bitumen for twenty years. Total recoverable reserves for J2 are estimated at over 300 million barrels.

Engineering studies are underway to determine the final capacity of the new project and to define the optimal level of integration with the Jackfish facility.

Devon is committed to environmentally sustainable economic development and the involvement of the community from the earliest stages of project planning.  The consultation process for J2 will build on our ongoing co-operative approach implemented for Jackfish. Devon is working with local stakeholders to develop a strong foundation and operating principles for the J2 Project that balances environmental, social and economic considerations.

Construction of J2, pending regulatory approvals, is scheduled to begin in 2008 with initial production targeted for 2010.

J2 will be Devon’s third SAGD operation in the Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta. We will build on experience gained through the development of the current Jackfish Project and seven years (1998-2004) as operator of the Dover Underground Test Facility, the longest-running SAGD facility in the world.

Our commitment to operational best practices and corporate social responsibility is reflected in our Platinum-Level standing in the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers’ Stewardship initiative ( www.capp.ca ).
