Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada

Reduction program among industry's best

Exploration and production in the oil and natural gas industry can be a challenging business, especially when a company is committed to minimizing its greenhouse gas emissions.
Devon works hard to conduct its operations in an environmentally responsible way and to reduce its impact on land, water and the air.

Emission reduction is a key to Devon’s stewardship commitment Our track record is illustrated by a tradition of accomplishment that demonstrates our drive to be an industry leader.

In Canada, we continue to take a proactive approach to emission reduction that reaches beyond government mandates. We use innovation and implement technology that continues to reduce our emissions. We support educational programs that encourage emission reduction, and we plan for further reductions in the future.

Devon has taken an aggressive stance on emission reduction. We are dedicated to setting targets to improve the energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at our facilities. We also have taken on the responsibility to plan methods of reaching these targets and to monitor our progress.

Through 2009, Devon’s efforts have resulted in total greenhouse gas emission reductions of 12.3 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent. In 2009, emission reduction initiatives resulted in a reduction of 1.4 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Examples of these initiatives include significant reductions in solution gas venting, process optimization, and the implementation of a program to reduce fugitive emissions.

Our aggressive stand on emission reduction has earned elite status among companies participating in Canada’s Voluntary Challenge and Registry program. Under the program administered by the Canadian Standards Association, Devon is a Gold Champion Level Reporter, a designation given to companies that achieve the highest level of participation.

For Devon, it is not enough to comply with minimum standards set by federal and provincial reporting mandates. We strive to improve, educate and plan ahead because a proactive emission reduction program saves energy, is good for the environment and is good for business.
