Our executive chairman and co-founder, Larry Nichols, has a saying about workplace safety. It goes like this:
“No job is so important and no task so urgent that the necessary steps cannot be taken to perform it safely and maintain the health of our employees, contractors and the public.”
With that statement as our guide, Devon takes exhaustive measures to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, as well as the sites where we operate. These measures include regular meetings where safety procedures are discussed. Additionally, we conduct frequent incident drills, where managers and employees act on their training and then discuss potential improvements for the future. Most recently, we created a safety attributes guide, which explains succinctly what we expect from management and employees. This attributes list reminds employees to anticipate risk, to make workplace safety a priority and to take pride in a zero-incident mentality. It also empowers them to communicate potential hazards and suggest corrective measures.
The following stories illustrate how this corporate attitude has yielded impressive results.
