J. Marcum is no ordinary teenager. Instead of asking for the newest iPhone, video game or jewelry on her birthday, this young woman asks for stuffed animals, toys and books each year. When Marcum’s friends realized she was donating her birthday gifts to hospitalized children, they were inspired to join her and give more. In 2010, Marcum and her friends provided more than 300 books to children confined to hospital beds.
Marcum is one of many community heroes recognized by Devon for their efforts to contribute to the community and enhance the quality of life for others. Devon has partnered with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets of the NBA to honor those – like Marcum – who go above and beyond to make a difference in their community.
Devon teamed with the Oklahoma City Thunder to present the Devon Community Hero Award. The award is designed to honor outstanding Oklahomans who are making a significant difference in their community through their personal contributions of time, talent or money. The program strives to recognize a variety of people, from well-known Oklahomans to everyday heroes, highlighting the unique contributions they have made. During the 2009-2010 season, Devon and the Oklahoma City Thunder honored five deserving individuals.
In Texas, Devon partners with the Houston Rockets to recognize exemplary teachers in the Houston area who inspire students to succeed. In addition to center-court recognition at a basketball game, teachers honored through the Devon Energy Teacher of the Game program receive gift certificates to school supply stores to purchase materials for their classroom.
Recognizing community heroes such as Marcum and outstanding Houston teachers is important to Devon. It’s the character of people who go above and beyond to help others that make our communities stronger.
