Preventing hunger through food drives

One way Devon supports communities where we operate is by stocking the shelves of local food banks to prevent hunger. The company’s food drive and fundraising campaign in Oklahoma City is an example of employees working together to prevent hunger in the community.

In 2011, Devon collected nearly 2,000 pounds of food in the company’s most successful food drive to date. In addition, the company matched employees’ financial contributions, resulting in a $700,375 total to benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Contributions do not stop at collecting cans and raising cash. Devon employees also volunteer to work in shifts to fill boxes with food and load them into trucks for delivery. In past food drives, Devon employees have boxed and loaded enough food in a day to provide more than 100,000 meals and fill six semi trucks to the brim.

Employees also volunteer their time during the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. During the event, volunteers spend a Saturday unloading, sorting and reloading food for the single-day food drive in the country.

Employees in Bridgeport, Texas, also donate time and energy to their community. That includes work at a local nursing home and the Wise County Emergency Food Bank.

Employees from Devon’s midstream operations raised more than $730 for the Wise County Emergency Food Bank in just one day. However, employees joined together to raise more than just cash. They collected much-needed items such as canned food, baby supplies and toiletries for the food bank, and sweatshirts, socks and other items.

Preventing hunger in areas where we operate is important for the strength of communities. By partnering with local food banks, Devon strives to help provide hungry families, children and seniors with increased access to the food they need to be healthy and productive citizens.
