Challenging students to achieve math and science excellence

In response to a national push for more math and science initiatives, Devon partnered with Texas Christian University to launch the Energy for Frogs Challenge. This program presents practical applications of math and science to north Texas middle school students to generate excitement about the topics and to encourage students to pursue math and science activities.

Throughout the school year, hundreds of seventh- and eighth-grade students take multiple quizzes to test their math and science skills. Students who score highest are rewarded with tickets to a TCU home football game. Devon hosts pep rallies with the TCU mascot – a horned frog - and cheerleaders the week of the game to announce the winners.

Winning students receive VIP treatment with refreshments, special seats and recognition of their accomplishment during the game. More than 420 students from 11 middle schools have met the challenge and received game tickets since the program’s inception.

“This program is far beyond just going to a football game,” says Bill Brimmer, Devon right-of-way superintendent. “The Energy for Frogs program puts the student focus on math and science. It presents a great opportunity for parents to talk to their children about performance in school and development of a career path. This Devon program is a win-win for both the student and parents.”

Devon is committed to being a good corporate citizen and a long-term supporter of numerous youth and education initiatives. To solve tomorrow’s energy challenges, it is critical that the next workforce generation develop a solid foundation in math and science. This program is one example of how Devon engages with its future workforce in an effort to stimulate interest in math and science.
