J. Larry Nichols, 67, is a co-founder of Devon and has been a director since 1971 and has been chief executive officer since 1980.  Nichols graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in geology and he completed his juris doctorate at the University of Michigan in 1967, where he was a member of the Order of Coif and a comment editor of Law Review. Nichols served as law clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren and Justice Tom Clark of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1967 to 1968. He then served as special assistant to Assistant Attorney General William Rehnquist in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. 

A leader in the industry, Nichols serves as chairman of the American Petroleum Institute and is on the executive committee of the board of directors for America’s Natural Gas Alliance.  He is on the board of the Business Industry Political Action Committee in Washington, D.C. and is the former chairman and a current director of the American Exploration & Production Council.

John Richels, 58, was elected president of Devon in 2004 and joined the board of directors in 2007. He previously served as a senior vice president of Devon and president and chief executive officer of Devon’s Canadian subsidiary. Richels joined Devon through its 1998 acquisition of Canadian-based Northstar Energy Corp. Prior to joining Northstar, Richels was managing and chief operating partner of the Canadian-based national law firm, Bennett Jones. Richels previously served as a director of a number of publicly traded companies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from York University and a law degree from the University of Windsor.

Hager, 52, holds the position of executive vice president – Exploration and Production, and has been with the company since March 2009.  From 2007 until joining the company, Hager served as a member of the board of directors.  From 1999 to 2006, Hager was employed by Kerr-McGee Corp., serving in various capacities, most recently as chief operating officer.  Hager has a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics from Purdue University and a Masters degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University.  Hager also serves as a director of Pride International, Inc.

R. Alan Marcum, 42, was elected to the position of executive vice president, Administration, in 2008. Marcum has been with Devon since 1995, and most recently held the position of vice president and controller. Marcum is responsible for office administration, information technology, project management, and records management. Prior to joining Devon, Marcum was employed by KPMG Peat Marwick (now KPMG LLP) as a senior auditor. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from East Central University, majoring in accounting and finance. Marcum is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Oklahoma State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Frank W. Rudolph, 52, was elected to the position of executive vice president, Human Resources, in 2007. In the seven years prior to joining Devon, Rudolph was vice president Human Resources for Banta Corporation, an international printing and supply chain management company with 9,000 employees. His career in human resources began at R. R. Donnelly & Sons and spans more than 25 years. Rudolph has also held human resources management positions at SANWA-Overhead Door Corp., US West Communications, Clark Refining and Marketing, Inc., James River Corporation and Tenneco Packaging. Rudolph holds a Bachelor of Science degree in administration from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in industrial relations and management from Loyola University.

Darryl G. Smette, 61, was elected to the position of executive vice president, Marketing and Midstream, in 1999. Smette previously held the position of vice president, Marketing and Administrative Planning. His marketing background includes 15 years with Energy Reserves Group Inc./BHP Petroleum (Americas) Inc. He is also an oil and gas industry instructor, approved by the University of Texas Department of Continuing Education. Smette is a member of the Oklahoma Independent Producers Association, Natural Gas Association of Oklahoma and the American Gas Association. He holds an undergraduate degree from Minot State University and a master’s degree from Wichita State University.

Lyndon C. Taylor, 50, was elected to the position of executive vice president and general counsel in February 2007. Taylor had served as Devon’s deputy general counsel since August 2005. Prior to joining Devon, Taylor was with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP for 20 years, most recently as managing partner of the Houston office’s energy practice. He is admitted to practice law in Oklahoma and Texas. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from Oklahoma State University and a law degree from the University of Oklahoma.

William F. Whitsitt, 64, was elected to the position of executive vice president, Public Affairs, in August 2008. Prior to joining Devon, Whitsitt spent 11 years in Washington D.C. as a public affairs consultant representing a broad range of clients including Devon. Whitsitt previously served as director of governmental affairs for one of the world’s largest law firms and held the position of vice president of worldwide marketing and public affairs for Oryx Energy Co. He has served as chief of staff to a U.S. Senator and as a legislative assistant in the Senate and House of Representatives. Whitsitt holds a doctoral degree in Public Administration from George Washington University.
